1. ) transitive FORMAL to attract and keep someone's interest or attention:
A good radio script should be able to engage the listener.
a ) to start to employ someone or use their services:
The company is to engage a new sales director.
engage someone to do something: A magician has been engaged to provide entertainment.
2. ) intransitive or transitive if a part of a machine engages, or you engage it, it fits into another part so that they work together:
A microswitch in the gear shift automatically engages and disengages the clutch.
The mechanism failed to engage, causing a fault.
